USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

USD/JPY dropped further to as low as 109.47 last week but then formed a temporary low there and turned sideway. Initial bias is turned neutral this week for some consolidations first. On the downside, break of 109.47 and sustained trading below 109.72 key support will confirm completion of rebound from 104.69 at 112.40 on bearish divergence condition in daily MACD. Deeper decline should then be seen back to retest 104.69 low. For now, this will remain the favored case as long as 110.95 resistance holds.

In the bigger picture, USD/JPY is staying inside falling channel from 118.65. Thus, there is no confirmation of trend reversal yet. Sustained break of 109.71 will argue that rebound from 104.69 is completed. And the down trend from 118.65 is still in progress. But at this stage, in case of break of 104.69, we’d expect strong support above 98.9 (2016 low) to contain downside an bring rebound.

In the long term picture, the rise from 75.56 (2011 low) long term bottom to 125.85 (2015 high) is viewed as an impulsive move, no change in this view. Price actions from 125.85 are seen as a corrective move which could still extend. In case of deeper fall, downside should be contained by 61.8% retracement of 75.56 to 125.85 at 94.77. Up trend from 75.56 is expected to resume at a later stage for above 135.20/147.68 resistance zone.

While USD/JPY continues to lose upside momentum as seen in 4H MACD, there is no sign of topping yet. Intraday bias stays on the upside for 161.8% projection of 127.20 to 137.90 from 129.62 at 146.93. On the downside, below 143.72 minor support will turn bias again and bring consolidations. But further rally will remain in favor as long as 140.90 resistance turned support holds.

In the bigger picture, rise from 127.20 is currently seen as the second leg of the corrective pattern from 151.93 high. Further rally is expected as long as 137.90 resistance turned support holds, to retest 151.93. But strong resistance could be seen there to limit upside. Break of 137.90 will indicate the the third leg has started back towards 127.20.

No change in USD/JPY’s outlook and intraday bias stays on the upside for 100% projection of 109.11 to 116.34 from 114.40 at 121.63. Sustained break there will pave the way to 161.8% projection 126.09, which is close to 125.85 long term resistance. On the downside, below 120.37 minor support will turn intraday bias neutral and bring consolidations first, before staging another rally.

In the bigger picture, the break of 118.65 resistance (2016 high) suggest that up trend from 98.97 (2016 low) is resuming, with rise from 101.18 (2020 low) as the third leg. Medium term outlook will remain bullish as long as 113.46 low. Next target is 125.85 (2015 high).

USD/JPY is staying in consolidation from 131.24. Intraday bias stays neutral at this point. Near term outlook remains bullish with 126.91 support intact. Break of 131.24 will resume recent up trend to 261.8% projection of 109.11 to 116.34 from 114.40 at 133.26. However, considering bearish divergence condition in 4 hour MACD, break of 126.91 will confirm short term topping and turn bias back to the downside for a correction.

In the bigger picture, current rally is seen as part of the long term up trend form 75.56 (2011 low). Sustained trading above 61.8% projection of 75.56 (2011 low) to 125.85 (2015 high) from 98.97 at 130.04 will pave the way to 100% projection at 149.26, which is close to 147.68 (1998 high). For now, this will remain the favored case as long as 121.27 support holds.

USD/JPY Weekly Outlook

USD/JPY’s rebound from 104.45 extended higher last week despite diminishing upside momentum. Further rise is expected this week with 107.19 support intact. Next target is 109.31 key resistance. We’d continue to look for topping sign as it approaches this 109.31. On the downside, break of 107.19 minor support will suggest that rebound from 104.45 has completed. Intraday bias will be turned back to the downside for retesting 104.45 low. However, decisive break of 109.31 will carry larger bullish implication.

In the bigger picture, decline from 118.65 (Dec 2016) is still in progress and the pair is staying well inside long term falling channel. Firm break of 104.69 will target 100% projection of 118.65 to 104.62 from 114.54 at 100.51. For now, we’d expect strong support above 98.97 (2016 low) to contain downside to bring rebound. However, firm break of 109.31 will be the first sign of medium term reversal and bring stronger rise to 112.40 resistance for confirmation.

Intraday bias in USD/JPY stays on the upside at this point. Rebound from 127.20 short term bottom should extend to 38.2% retracement of 151.93 to 127.20 at 136.64, even as a correction to the decline from 151.39. On the downside, break of 131.49 minor support will turn intraday bias neutral again first.

In the bigger picture, prior of 55 week EMA (now at 131.47) raises the chance of medium term bearish reversal, but that’s not confirmed yet. Strong rebound from current level, followed by sustained break of 38.2% retracement of 151.93 to 127.20 at 136.64 will argue that price actions from 151.93 is merely a corrective pattern. However, rejection by 136.64 will solidify medium term bearishness for 61.8% retracement of 102.58 to 151.93 at 121.43 and 38.2% retracement of 75.56 to 151.93 at 122.75.

USD/JPY is staying in consolidation above 108.10 temporary low and intraday bias remains neutral first. As long as 109.82 minor resistance holds, near term outlook remains mildly bearish. Below 108.10 will target 61.8% retracement of 104.62 to 111.39 at 107.20. Break will likely resume larger decline from 118.65 for a new low below 104.62. Nonetheless, break of 109.82 will turn focus back to 111.39 resistance instead.

In the bigger picture, USD/JPY remains bounded in medium term falling channel from 118.65 (2016 high). The development. Current deeper than expected fall from 111.39 argues that fall from 118.65 is not finished. Break of 104.62 low would target 98.97 or even below. Though, break of 111.39 will revive the case that fall from 118.65 has completed and turn focus to 114.73 for confirmation.

Intraday bias in USD/JPY remains on the downside at this point. Current fall from 151.89 should target medium term channel support at 146.00 next. On the upside, above 148.67 minor resistance will turn intraday bias neutral and bring recovery. But risk will stay on the downside as long as 151.89 resistance holds.

In the bigger picture, rise from 127.20 (2023 low) is seen as the second leg of the pattern from 151.93 resistance (2022 high). Decisive break of 145.06 resistance turned support will confirm that this second leg has completed, after rejection by 151.93. Deeper fall would be seen through 38.2% retracement of 127.20 to 151.89 at 142.45 to 61.8% retracement at 136.63. Nevertheless strong bounce from 145.06 will retain medium term bullishness for another test on 151.93 at a later stage.

Break there will resume whole rebound from 106.07 to 109.85 resistance. On the downside, however, break of 106.63 will turn bias to the downside for 106.07 support instead.

In the bigger picture, USD/JPY is still staying in long term falling channel that started back in 118.65 (Dec2016). Hence, there is no clear indication of trend reversal yet. The down trend could still extend through 101.18 low. However, sustained break of 112.22 should confirm completion of the down trend and turn outlook bullish for 118.65 and above.

Intraday bias in USD/JPY remains on the upside for the moment. Corrective fall from 150.87 should have completed at 146.47, after drawing support from 38.2% retracement of 140.25 to 150.87 at 146.81. Further rally should be seen to 150.87/89 key resistance zone. Nevertheless, on the downside, below 148.02 minor support will turn intraday bias neutral first.

In the bigger picture, no change in the view that price action from 151.89 (2023 high) are correction to up trend from 127.20 (2023 low). The question is whether this correction has completed at 140.25, or extending with fall from 150.87 as the third leg. Sustained break of above mentioned 146.81 fibonacci level will favor the latter case. But even so, downside should be contained by 50% retracement of 127.20 to 151.89 at 139.54

With 109.36 minor support intact, intraday bias in USD/JPY remains mildly on the upside for retesting 111.39. Break will resume the rebound from 104.62 and target a test on 114.73 key resistance level. However, on the downside, below 109.36 minor support will delay the bullish case and turn bias neutral again.

In the bigger picture, at this point , we’re slightly favoring the case that corrective decline from 118.65 (2016 high) has completed with three waves down to 104.62. Above 111.39 will affirm this view and target 114.73 for confirmation. However, it should be noted that USD/JPY is bounded in medium term falling channel from 118.65 (2016 high). Sustained break of 61.8% retracement of 104.62 to 111.39 at 107.20 will likely resume the fall from 118.65 through 104.62 low.

Stronger rise would be seen to 105.67 resistance for confirmation.

In the bigger picture, USD/JPY is still staying in long term falling channel that started back in 118.65 (Dec. 2016). Hence, there is no clear indication of trend reversal yet. Firm break there will resume the rally from 104.62 and target 114.73 key resistance. On the downside, below 109.36 will resume the fall from 110.89. In that case, as price actions from 111.39 are seen as a corrective pattern, we’d expect strong support from 61.8% retracement of 104.62 to 111.39 at 107.20 to contain downside and bring rebound.

Break of 127.20 will resume this down trend and target 61.8% projection of 151.93 to 127.20 from 137.90 at 122.61. This will now be the favored case as long as 137.90 resistance holds.

USD/JPY’s rebound from 104.62 extends to as high as 106.33 so far today. But still, it’s staying well below 106.63 resistance. Intraday bias remains neutral with near term outlook staying bearish. On the downside, break of 104.62 will resume larger fall fro 104.20 projection level first. Sustained break there will pave the way to 98.97 (2016 low). Nonetheless, break of 106.63 will indicate short term bottom and turn bias back to the upside for stronger rebound.

In the bigger picture, medium term down trend from 118.65 (2016 high) is still in progress and extending. Build up in downside momentum argues that it might be extending the whole corrective pattern from 125.85 (2015 high). 100% projection of 118.65 to 108.12 from 114.73 at 104.20 will be a key level to watch as firm break there could bring downside acceleration. And in that case, 98.97 key support level (2016 low) would at least be breached. This bearish case will now be favored as long as 108.12 support turned resistance holds.

USD/JPY’s break of 156.36 minor support argues that rebound from 151.86 has possibly completed with three waves up to 157.70. Corrective pattern from 160.20 might have started the third leg already. Intraday bias is back on the downside for 153.59 support first. Firm break there will solidify this case and target 151.86 support and below. For now, rise will stay on the downside as long as 157.70 resistance holds, in case of recovery.

In the bigger picture, a medium term top might be formed at 160.20. But as long as 150.87 resistance turned support holds, fall from there is seen as correcting rise from 150.25 only. However, decisive break of 150.87 will argue that larger correction is possibly underway, and target 146.47 support next.
