GBP/USD Mid-Day Outlook

Daily Pivots: (S1) 1.3005; (P) 1.3028; (R1) 1.3047; More

GBP/USD’s pull back from 1.3125 extends lower today but it’s staying well above 1.2811 support. Intraday bias remains neutral and another rise is still in favor. Break of 1.3125 will target 61.8% projection of 1.2108 to 1.3047 from 1.2588 at 1.3168. Overall, choppy rebound from 1.1946 is seen as a corrective pattern, hence, we’d be cautious on strong resistance from 1.3168 to limit upside. But firm break of 1.3168 will bring further rise towards 1.3444 key resistance. Meanwhile, break of 1.2811 support will be the first sign of reversal and will turn bias to the downside to target 1.2588 key support next.

In the bigger picture, overall, price actions from 1.1946 medium term low are seen as a corrective pattern that is still in progress. While further upside is expected, overall outlook remains bearish as long as 1.3444 key resistance holds. Larger down trend from 1.7190 is expected to resume later after the correction completes. And break of 1.2588 will indicate that such down trend is resuming.

GBP/USD is losing some downside momentum, but with 1.3714 minor resistance intact, further fall is expected for 1.3570/3601 support zone. . Larger decline from 1.4248 is likely resuming and break of 1.3570 will target 1.3482 key support level. Sustained break there will carry larger bearish implication and target 1.3163 fibonacci level. On the upside, above 1.3714 minor resistance will turn intraday bias back to the upside for 1.3912 resistance instead.

In the bigger picture, as long as 1.3482 resistance turned support holds, we’d still treat price actions from 1.4248 as a corrective move. That is, up trend from 1.1409 (2020 low) is in favor to resume. Decisive break of 1.4376 key resistance (2018 high) would indeed carry long term bullish implications. However, sustained break of 1.3482 will at least bring deeper fall to 38.2% retracement of 1.1409 to 1.4248 at 1.3164, or even further to 61.8% retracement at 1.2493.

GBP/USD Weekly Outlook

GBP/USD’s strong rebound last week argues that rise from 1.2108 is still in progress. And more importantly, the consolidation pattern from 1.1946 could extend with another rise. Further rise will now be mildly is favor as long as 1.2365 support holds.

GBP/USD 4 Hours Chart

Further rise is expected in GBP/USD this week as long as 1.2365 support holds. Break of 1.2614 will resume rise from 1.2108 and target 100% projection of 1.2108 to 1.2614 from 1.2365 at 1.2871. But overall, price actions from 1.1946 low are viewed as a consolidation pattern. We’d expect strong resistance around 55 week EMA (now at 1.3034) to limit upside and bring down trend resumption. Meanwhile, break of 1.2365 will turn bias back to the downside for 1.2108 support.

GBP/USD Daily Chart

In the bigger picture, fall from 1.7190 is seen as part of the down trend from 2.1161. There is no sign of medium term reversal yet. Sustained trading below 61.8% projection of 2.1161 to 1.3503 from 1.7190 at 1.2457 will target 100% projection at 0.9532. Overall, break of 1.3444 resistance is needed to confirm medium term bottoming. Otherwise, outlook will remain bearish.

GBP/USD Weekly Chart

In the longer term picture, no change in the view that down trend from 2.1161 is still in progress. Current momentum suggests that the down trend will go deeper than originally expected to 100% projection of 2.1161 to 1.3503 from 1.7190 at 0.9532.

With 1.2802 minor resistance, intraday bias in GBP/USD remains on the downside. We’re favoring the case that consolidation pattern from 1.1946 has completed at 1.3047 already. Break of 1.2614 resistance turned support would confirm our bearish view and target a test on 1.1946 low next. On the upside, above 1.2802 will bring turn bias neutral and bring recovery. But outlook will remain bearish as long as 1.2977 resistance holds.

In the bigger picture, fall from 1.7190 is seen as part of the down trend from 2.1161. Price actions from 1.1946 medium term low are seen as a consolidation pattern, which could have completed after hitting 55 week EMA. Break of 1.1946 low will target 61.8% projection of 1.5016 to 1.1946 from 1.3047 at 1.1150 next. Intraday bias in GBP/USD remains neural for consolidation above 1.2774 temporary low. We’re holing on to view that rise from 1.2108 is completed. Hence, upside of current recovery should be limited by 1.2926 minor resistance and bring another decline. Below 1.2774 will target 1.2614 resistance turned support next. Break there should also indicate completion of whole consolidation pattern from 1.1946 and target a retest on this low. Meanwhile, above 1.2926 minor resistance will turn focus back to 1.3047 high instead.

In the bigger picture, fall from 1.7190 is seen as part of the down trend from 2.1161. The rejection from 55 week EMA is maintaining bearishness in the pair. Also, at this point, as long as 1.3444 resistance holds, fall from 1.7190 is still expected to continue. Break of above mentioned 1.2614 support will affirm this bearish case.

GBP/USD Weekly Outlook

GBP/USD stayed in consolidation in range of 1.3026/3337 last week and outlook is unchanged. Initial bias remains neutral this week first. On the downside, firm break of 1.3026 will resume the decline from 1.3651 and target 1.2773 key support level. This will also revive the case of medium term reversal. On the upside, in case of another rally, upside should be limited by 61.8% retracement of 1.3651 to 1.3026 at 1.3412 to bring fall resumption finally.

In the bigger picture, while the medium term rebound from 1.1946 was strong, GBP/USD hit strong resistance from the long term falling trend line. Outlook is turned a bit mixed and we’ll stay neutral first. On the downside, decisive break of 1.2773 key support will argue that rebound from 1.1946 has completed. The corrective structure of rise from 1.1946 to 1.3651 will in turn suggest that long term down trend is now completed. Break of 1.1946 low should then be seen. On the upside, break of 1.3835 support turned resistance will revive the case of trend reversal and target 38.2% retracement of 2.1161 (2007 high) to 1.1946 (2016 low) at 1.5466 .

In the longer term picture, long the outlook is turned a bit mixed as GBP/USD failed to break through falling tend line resistance. We’ll stay neutral first and assess the outlook again and price actions unfold.

GBP/USD Weekly Outlook

GBP/USD rose to as high as 1.3549 last week, formed a temporary top there and retreated. Initial bias is neutral this week first. But retreat should be contained by 1.3337 resistance turned support to bring another rise. Above 1.3549 will target 1.3651 and above. However, decisive break of 1.3337 will argue that rise from 1.3038 has complete d and turn bias back to the downside for this support.

In the bigger picture, while the medium term rebound from 1.1946 low is strong, it’s still limited below 1.3835 key support turned resistance. As long as 1.3835 holds, we’d view such rebound as a correction. That is, we’d expect another leg in the long term down trend through 1.1946 low.
