GBP/JPY Daily Outlook

Daily Pivots: (S1) 205.28; (P) 205.98; (R1) 206.66; More

Intraday bias in GBP/JPY is turned neutral with loss of momentum as seen in 4H MACD. On the upside, sustained break of 100% projection of 191.34 to 200.72 from 197.18 at 206.56 will target 138.2% projection at 210.17. On the downside, below 204.97 minor support will turn bias to the downside for deeper pull back.

In the bigger picture, long term up trend is still in progress. Next target is 100% projection of 155.33 to 188.63 from 178.32 at 211.62. Outlook will stay bullish as long as 197.18 support holds, even in case of deep pullback.

GBP/JPY Daily Outlook

Daily Pivots: (S1) 141.23; (P) 141.65; (R1) 142.13; More

Intraday bias in GBP/JPY remains neutral for the moment. On the upside, firm break of 142.16 will indicate completion of the fall from 148.42. More importantly, this will suggest that such decline is merely a three wave correction and the rise from 122.36 isn’t completed. In such case, intraday bias will be turned to the upside for 148.42 and then 150.42 fibonacci level. Meanwhile, below 136.44 will target 61.8% retracement of 122.36 to 148.42 at 132.31 and below.

In the bigger picture, price actions from 122.36 medium term bottom are seen as developing into a corrective pattern. Upside is so far limited below 38.2% retracement of 195.86 to 122.36 at 150.42 for setting the medium term range. At this point, we don’t expect a break of 122.36 in near term and the corrective pattern would extend for a while. Though, sustained break of 150.42 will target 61.8% retracement at 167.78.

GBP/JPY’s decline is still in progress and reaches as low as 145.62 so far. Intraday bias remains on the downside for 143.51 medium term fibonacci level next. On the upside, above 147.47 minor resistance will turn intraday bias neutral first. But outlook will remain bearish as long as 150.92 resistance holds, in case of recovery.

In the bigger picture, the case for medium term reversal continues to build up on loss of medium term momentum as seen in weekly MACD. Also, firm break of 146.96 should now indicate rejection by 55 month EMA (now at 154.60) and add to that case of reversal. Deeper fall would be seen to 38.2% retracement of 122.36 to 156.59 at 143.51 and then 61.8% retracement at 135.43. This will now be the preferred case as long as 150.92 resistance holds.

GBP/JPY is staying in consolidation from 156.05 and intraday bias remains neutral first. Outlook will remain bullish as long as 153.81 support holds. Break of 156.05 will resume larger up trend for 61.8% projection of 133.03 to 153.39 from 149.03 at 161.61. On the downside, firm break of 153.81 will indicate short term topping and turn bias back to the downside for deeper pull back.

In the bigger picture, rise from 123.94 is seen as the third leg of the pattern from 122.75 (2016 low). Focus is now on 156.59 resistance (2018 high). Sustained break there should confirm long term bullish trend reversal. Next target is 61.8% retracement of 195.86 (2015 high) to 122.75 at 167.93. On the downside, break of 149.03 support is needed to be the first sign of completion of the rise from 123.94. Otherwise, outlook will remain bullish even in case of deep pull back.

We’d expect strong support from 61.8% retracement of 139.29 to 152.82 at 144.45 to contain downside and bring rebound. On the upside, break of 149.98 resistance will turn bias back to the upside for 151.92/152.82 resistance zone instead.

GBP/JPY’s decline accelerates after breaking 144.01 and reaches as low as 142.51 so far. Intraday bias remains on the downside for trend line support (now at 141.87). Further break there will target 135.58/138.65 support zone. As GBP/JPY is seen as staying in consolidation pattern from 148.42, we’d expect strong support from 135.58 to contain downside. On the upside, above 143.56 minor resistance will turn intraday bias neutral first. But break of 146.77 is needed to signal completion of the fall from 147.76. In the bigger picture, rise from medium term bottom at 122.36 is expected to continue to 38.2% retracement of 196.85 to 122.36 at 150.43. Decisive break there will carry long term bullish implications and pave the way to 61.8% retracement at 167.78. In case the sideway pattern from 148.42 extends, we’d be looking for strong support from 135.58 and 50% retracement of 122.36 to 148.42 at 135.39 to contain downside.

GBP/JPY breached 148.65 minor support last week but quickly recovered. Initial bias is neutral this week first. Overall, it’s bounded in consolidation pattern from 152.82. Break of 148.42 support will start the third leg and target 146.92 and below. But we’d expect strong support from 61.8% retracement of 139.29 to 152.82 at 144.45 to contain downside and bring rebound. On the upside, above 151.92 will retest 152.82 high instead.

In the bigger picture, medium term rebound from 122.36 is still expected to resume after corrective pull back from 152.82 completes. Firm break of 38.2% retracement of 196.85 to 122.36 at 150.43 will carry long term bullish implications. In that case, GBP/JPY could target 61.8% retracement at 167.78. And the three wave corrective structure of rebound from 122.36 will argue that larger down trend is resuming for a new low below 122.26.

In the longer term picture, current rebound argues that the down trend from 195.86 (2015 high) has already completed at 122.36. Focus is now on 55 month EMA (now at 154.78). Firm break there will suggest that rise form 122.36 is developing into a long term move that target 195.86 again. And, price actions from 116.83 (2011 low) is indeed a sideway pattern that could last more than a decade.
